From Mexico to College Greens: Corina Shaw's Story
May 22, 2025 / by Itsel Oseguera

When Corina Shaw first arrived in Northern California from Mexico, she brought with her a dream and a golf club. Corina’s love for the game began early. She held her first club as soon as she could stand and began competing by the age of five. Some of her favorite memories are of traveling across the U.S. with her father and sister, retracing the very courses her father played as a child. A competitive junior golfer from a young age, Corina had one goal in mind: earn a scholarship to play college golf in the U.S. But turning that dream into reality required more than just talent and ambition. It required access.
That’s where Youth on Course came in. Corina became a member and quickly found herself on a path paved with opportunity.
“Being a member for 7 years gave me the needed access to practice my game on a variety of courses, especially those my sister and I would be having tournaments on. The one thing golf demands is access, so one can hone their skills and climb the ladder of success and reach the needed level to earn scholarships. The impact it has had on my life is immeasurable as I am still growing in the game, and the game has allowed me to afford college.”
Corina’s dedication paid off. In 2022, she was a Youth on Course scholar recipient and received the Blackhawk Senior Golf Association Scholarship.
“The impact this scholarship has had on my life both as a student and as an athlete has been immeasurable. It closed the gap of being able to pay my bills for the first 3 years of college. Without these wonderful, caring individuals I would not be anywhere close to being able to achieve my dream of playing intercollegiate golf."
She is currently a junior at Jessup University and is a part of the women’s golf team, competing in the NCAA PACWest Conference. Beyond playing, she’s also studying criminal justice, with plans to attend the police academy and ultimately join a SWAT team. Golf, she says, continues to shape her life on and off the course. As for her future goals regarding golf, Corina plans on entering the PGA apprenticeship program, where she can work on becoming a Class A member.
"The game has taught me many things, like perseverance and self-control, but most importantly honesty because without that core value, all the others are just window dressing. The game has also brought me from a country of very little opportunity to one with unlimited growth both personally and professionally.”
Corina’s journey is far from over, and as she continues to excel in college golf, we’re proud to stand behind her and can’t wait to see where her drive and dedication take her next.
Youth on Course is more than just a program, it’s a launchpad. Corina's story is just one of thousands of young golfers whose lives have been transformed with affordable access.
