Youth on Course Scholar’s Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip to St Andrews

Every summer, a select group of Youth on Course members boards a plane bound for the birthplace of golf — St Andrews, Scotland. It’s more than just a trip; it’s a journey that blends history, culture, and connection, offering members the chance to walk the same fairways as golfing legends, meet peers from around the globe, and discover how the golf can open doors far beyond the course.

For 2025 Scholar Marlon Utrera Jr, Youth on Course opened doors far beyond his local courses in Hawaii. In his own words, Marlon shares the impact and meaning of this incredible experience, showing why opportunities like these are so important for young golfers.

Marlon’s Story:
Opportunities truly come from the most unexpected places. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would travel across the world from Hawaii to Scotland, the birthplace of golf, to play at the legendary St Andrews.

It all began when I signed up for Youth on Course, initially to get the opportunity to play my local municipal courses and regain my love for the sport I grew up playing but let go of due to financial difficulties. As opportunities presented themselves, I grasped them, not knowing where they might lead.

One day, I received a phone call that felt surreal: Michael Lowe, Head of Impact, reached out in his calm, easygoing voice and asked if I’d be interested in a trip “across the pond” to St Andrews. I was speechless, struggling to grasp the words as he explained. I felt as if it was straight out of a movie. I accepted without hesitation, ready to embrace this once-in-a-lifetime experience. But shortly after, I called my mother and father to confirm, which was met with skepticism — but they agreed.

With excitement and optimism, I traveled first to San Francisco, where I met Nicole Iniakov and Isabella Herrera, two fellow recipients, going to Harvard and USC.

Then we continued on to Philadelphia to meet Jonathan Moon, who is attending Hamilton College, another member of our cohort. At first, we were strangers but little did I know, they would soon become some of the coolest friends I’ve ever made.

Golf has truly taken me places I never could have imagined, and visiting the home of golf was never even on my bucket list.

Arriving in Scotland felt like a blink, one moment we landed under gray clouds that were a stark contrast to Hawaii’s bright blue skies, but the weather quickly turned, blessing us with sunshine that reminded me of home. I only needed my rain gear once, despite coming prepared for stormy days and windy weather!

Walking into St Andrews, I was blown away by stunning architecture reminiscent of medieval history books from school. To be honest, my knowledge of St Andrews had been limited to knowing the Open was held there and that legends like Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer had graced its fairways, so I made sure to keep an open mind.

We met students from Barbados, each bringing their own global perspectives to the journey. Upon arrival at the dorms, our guide Kenny welcomed us and took our clubs, before I knew it, we were walking on the Old Course itself. It was absolutely breathtaking, standing where golfing greats once stood and crossing the Swilcan Bridge. That moment truly took my breath away.

This trip made me deeply appreciate the unifying power of golf. People from every corner of the world, connected only by a love for the game, journey to St Andrews, the birthplace of golf. I’ve made countless memories on this adventure, but above all, I’ve grown to see how golf brings people together and opens doors none of us can predict.

Each person I encountered showed me the utmost kindness and gratitude. I can’t express how much this trip has expanded my view on this game and the world. Sharing my perspective and learning was my ultimate takeaway, each person with their own experiences, sharing how the same game we all play has impacted their lives.

Trying to embrace it all, I’ll never forget taking cold plunges in the very ocean where Old Tom once swam every morning, buying a kilt, and teeing it off at the prestigious Kingsbarns course. I look back at this experience as life-changing and perspective-altering. The connections I’ve made will take me further than the rounds I shot. Thank you, Youth on Course.
