From the Course to the Office: James Calderone’s Youth on Course Journey

Growing up in Stillwater, Minnesota, James Calderone’s world revolved around hockey rinks and baseball diamonds. Golf wasn’t on his radar until high school, when his parents signed him and his brothers up for Youth on Course. That single decision sparked a love for the game that would change the course of his life.

What began as a new after-school hobby quickly grew into something more. With affordable access through Youth on Course, James spent countless hours on the course, learning the game, competing, and developing the discipline and focus that golf demands.

“It felt exciting to learn something new,” James shared. “Looking at the bigger picture, I knew that golf’s longevity in a person's lifetime would outlast the other two sports as I got older and busier with adult life. Having picked up golf in late middle school as opposed to kindergarten when I started hockey and baseball, it felt like I was going to be a late bloomer.”

He still remembers his very first Youth on Course round.
Yes, I played at Applewood Hills in Stillwater, Minnesota with my two brothers: Charles and David. It’s an amazing course for all golfers of any skill, especially beginners. The one thing that stuck with me is how much I have improved my distances since then. I remember stepping up to the first tee box with a 7-iron in hand for a hole that was only about 125 yards and sticking it right on the center of the green; now when I play that hole, I sometimes fly the green with a pitching wedge.”

James went on to play NCAA Division III golf at the University of Minnesota Morris, before continuing his education at the University of Houston, where he earned a degree in Sports Administration. That path, he says, was inspired by the opportunities and experiences golf had opened for him.

Today, James has come full circle. As a Course Success Coordinator at Youth on Course, he’s working to ensure the next generation of young golfers can access the same affordable rounds and life-changing opportunities that once shaped his own path.

“Now I get to help create those same opportunities for kids across the country.”

His story also highlights the role of community support. Thanks to the Minnesota Golf Association and its continued partnership, thousands of kids like James have had the chance to experience the game, often for just $5 a round.

“For me personally, it definitely doesn’t go unnoticed,” James said. “Now that I am working here, I get to see firsthand the amount of time and effort people put into this to grow the game. Their tireless efforts to get youth golfers on the course have really shown what kind of tremendous work ethic they have, and that should definitely be spotlighted with all other YOC members in Minnesota both past and present.”

Looking back, James credits Youth on Course for introducing him to a game that’s now a lifelong passion. Looking forward, he’s motivated by the chance to give back.

My personal journey has allowed me to understand that golf is truly for everyone. I love being able to see that so many younger kids are getting on the course and are learning this amazing game knowing that I was once that kid.”
